The Authority for Research and Development and the Faculty of Humanities at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem are pleased to announce the Polonsky Prizes for Creativity and Originality in the Humanities for the year 2023.
The Polonsky Prizes were initiated in 2005 by Dr. Leonard Polonsky, a prominent member of the British Friends of The Hebrew University, who has very generously set up this award to provide support for research in the Humanities.
The prizes are intended for nominees belonging to the Faculty of Humanities* at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in the following three categories:
- Researchers (for a book or an article published within the last two years)
- Post-Doctoral researchers (for their dissertation, accepted within the last three years)
- Registered PhD or M.A. students (for a published article, or for an M.A. thesis accepted within the past year)
Up to four prizes – two researcher prizes, one post-doctorate and one student prize – will be awarded, in person only, in the ceremony at the University Board of Governors annual meeting, to be held between June 9-14, 2023.Prizes shall range from $2,000-5,000 for PhD and M.A. students, $5,000-6,000 for post-doctoral researchers, and $7,500-12,500 (before tax) for researchers.
Both self-nominations and nominations by colleagues and students may be submitted. The works submitted will be judged for creativity and originality.
Final Submission Date: 1.12.2022
- Submission, evaluation and fund distribution procedures will be handled by the Faculty of Humanities.

Nominations should be submitted as follows:
Category A: Researchers
An electronic copy of the following:
- The Application Form
- An abstract of 1-2 pages, in English and in Hebrew, explaining the creativity and originality of the work
- Two letters of recommendation from scholars, in English or Hebrew, from within or outside The Hebrew University
- In case of books, 1-2 sample chapters.
- 2-3 colorful illustrations or photos reflecting your research (in jpeg format, in high quality)
If the submission is for a book, in addition to the on-line submission, 2 hard copies of the book should be submitted to Hivit Koudinski at room no.4401, Faculty of Humanities.
Category B & C: Post-Doctoral researchers, PhD and M.A. students:
An electronic copy of the following:
- The Application Form
- An abstract of 1-2 pages, in English and in Hebrew, explaining the creativity and originality of the work
- Two letters of recommendation from scholars, in English or Hebrew, from within or outside The Hebrew University
- Article/chapter up to 30 pages or the full thesis
- Post-doctoral researchers ONLY: the evaluations of the dissertation
- 2-3 colorful illustrations or photos reflecting your research (in jpeg format, high quality)
